Part-Time Work and Your First Payslip

A beginner-friendly guide to PAYE, tax credits and what students in Ireland should notice on a first payslip.

  • A payslip helps you understand what you actually take home.
  • Emergency tax can hit new workers if details are not set up correctly.
  • Revenue is the right source for current tax details.

Resource explainer

Read a payslip in three checks

1

Check gross pay

What you earned before deductions.

2

Check deductions

Tax, PRSI and any other payroll items.

3

Check net pay

What actually lands in your account.

Focus on the essentials first

At the start, most students only need to know gross pay, deductions and net pay. That tells you what arrived before it disappears into rent, travel or food.

If net pay looks much lower than expected, check whether tax credits and payroll details were set up properly.

Use your payslip to improve your budget

Once you know your regular take-home pay, budgeting gets much easier. It also helps you avoid spending based on hours you may not get every week.

If your work pattern changes a lot, use a cautious average rather than your best week as the budget number.
